Who is the ideal patient for dental implants?

Replace missing teeth fast

Dental implants are a restorative dentistry treatment used to resolve the issues of missing teeth.

If left untreated, missing teeth can cause long-term oral health problems including a shrinking jaw bone and receding gums, damage to neighbouring teeth and it can increase your risk of gum disease.

Dental implants are made from titanium (or sometimes ceramic) and it acts as an artificial tooth, with an attached screw which is placed into the jawbone to keep the tooth in place (like a tooth root).

Unlike dentures, implants do not come with the risk of moving as they are permanently fixed into your mouth.

Most adults are eligible to have dental implants. It is important that the patient’s bone tissue has fully developed.

So, we usually do not use implants on people below age 18.

For the implants to work effectively, our adult patients should be in general good health and have healthy gums already.

We will carry out a full evaluation of your teeth and health prior to any treatment commencing.

However, some factors that may deter a dentist from offering implants is if the patient:

  • is a smoker
  • has had radiotherapy to their jaw area
  • has diabetes which isn’t well-controlled
  • suffers from gum disease

Each case is different, and if your dentist does not think implants are suitable for you, they will be able to advise you on an alternative and more appropriate option.

How should I prepare for treatment?

dental implantsA reliable dentist will carry out a thorough consultation meeting before any treatment is agreed.

This meeting will allow you to discuss your current health conditions and raise any issues that may exempt you from having dental implant treatment.

We want to choose the procedure which will be most beneficial to you, and all of our decisions are made with this principle in mind.

At Dorset Dental Implants we utilise modern technology to ensure the most effective, streamlined procedures.

We can capture X-rays and 3D scans of your teeth so we know exactly what we are working with.

Putting these kinds of measures in place means we avoid beginning treatment on a patient who has prior health conditions that will impact the effectiveness of the procedure.

What treatment is available?

At Dorset Dental Implants we offer many different dental implant treatment types including:

  • Single and multiple teeth: we treat cases where you have 1 missing tooth or 10 missing teeth!
  • Teeth in a day: a treatment option for patients who are looking for a quick-fix solution!
  • Dental weld cases: we use the WeldOne dental implant system to deliver bespoke teeth replacement in one day, leaving you with a stronger, more stable foundation.
  • Bone grafting: this process increases the width and height at the implant site, so the dental implant will have greater stability and durability.
  • Fixed teeth: we offer dental implant bridges (placing several teeth in a row) as a viable alternative to dentures or conventional bridges.

With so many different treatment types available, it is likely that we have something to suit every missing teeth issue.

Once we have carried out your comprehensive dental exam, we will be able to inform you what treatment is appropriate for you.

If your gums are not healthy enough, or you have another issue which means we can’t go ahead with dental implants, we will work with you to find the best alternative solution to leave you feeling confident about your smile again.
