Dental Implant Surgery Instructions
Every single patient before undergoing the dental implant procedure can often feel apprehensive.
It’s completely normal and understandable to feel this way. Our professional dentists have worked with numerous nervous patients closely in order to make them feel at ease and as comfortable as possible.
If anyone understands how you feel, we do. However, this feeling of anxiousness may be alleviated somewhat if you are better prepared for what is going to happen on the day.
Principal dentist, Dr Philip McCauley has outlined a few guidelines of how best to prepare for your procedure, the dos and don’ts and what to expect during treatment.
How to prepare for dental implants:
- Very importantly we want you to have eaten a decent meal prior to the procedure. This is so to ensure you have adequate blood sugar levels during the placement of the dental implant(s), which is important for the first few hours of healing.
- Wear light comfortable clothing, as we will place a protective gown over your clothing and it may get quite hot under there
- Please visit the loo prior to the implant placement on longer procedures for obvious reasons, it’s better things are not interrupted during the precise placement of your implant or implants.
- Please inform us if you have changed any medication since your last visit to see us.
- Unlike many other dental practices, we carry out our dental implant placements under strict sterile conditions, which can initially look intimidating. Please be reassured this is for your benefit and feel comforted that we adopt best practice for even the simplest of implant placements.
- We will give you antibiotics, antiseptic mouthwash, and sometimes anti-inflammatory steroids to reduce post-operative discomfort, immediately prior to your procedure.
- We will also give you a full post-operative care pack to take home with written instructions, and importantly, Doctor McCauley’s private contact details, should you have any queries or concerns after your procedure.
- If you have opted to have sedation, you must go home with a responsible adult. We recommend that you not drive for 24 hours, operate machinery, or look after small children alone. It’s best for you to go straight home and relax for the rest of the day.
- If you have had a single tooth or even up to three implants placed, you should be able to back to work the next day should you need to.
- For more comprehensive procedures, we recommend you schedule your appointment on a Thursday or Friday, have a quiet weekend, and return to work the following Monday should you so wish.
- Most importantly, if you are on any blood-thinning type of medication or aspirin, you will have been given instructions on how to come off those drugs before the procedure, please follow these instructions precisely, to avoid complications.
