What is a bar-retained overdenture?

A bar-retained over denture is a removable prosthetic structure placed in the mouth containing replacement teeth, mounted in a base made of pink resin which fits snugly over your existing gums.

It has clips underneath that attach to a metal bar which is fixed in place using dental implants.

Using implants to stabilise an over-denture provides a solid foundation for the denture and allows for optimal eating and speaking.

It also helps prevent bone loss and retains the mouth’s structure and strength.

Surgical procedure:

Before the treatment:

The first step in the process is to take an impression of the area, which your dentist will use to create a set of temporary dentures for you.

When the temporary dentures are completed, diagnostic images are taken of the area to plan out the placement of the dental implants which will be placed to support the denture.

During the procedure:

During the initial procedure, your dentist will place the implants. Following this, another impression of your mouth will be taken to help create the supporting bar for your overdenture

Throughout the healing process, you will be able to wear your removable dentures so you are not without teeth at any point. You can smile confidently throughout the whole process.

During follow up appointments, your dentist will check the bite alignment of the bar and final denture so it is perfect for your mouth.

This may require multiple incremental ‘try-in’ fittings to ensure the best final result for you.

Once all adjustments have been made, the support bar is fixed in place and the overdenture placed onto the bar.

Your dental implants make the bar-retained overdenture perfectly stable.

 Advantages of implant retained dentures:

Opting for implant-retained dentures as opposed to removable or partial dentures means that you will have a fixed and permanent solution to missing teeth.

There are so many benefits:

  • They will not fall out or slip as they are clasped in. You do not need denture adhesive.
  • They will not irritate the gums as they are fixed in place once in.
  • Natural-looking and comfortable
  • You do not have to avoid any foods or drinks
  • A long-term and durable solution

Aftercare and long-term maintenance

Cleaning and caring for implant-retained dentures are easier than removable full dentures.

Ensure that you regularly clean the dentures as well as your natural gums underneath to maintain the standards of your oral health.

Once your bar-retained overdenture has been fitted, your dentist will offer you aftercare and maintenance advice.
